First-time massage client at Massage Artistry in Decatur GA

Everything you need to know before your first massage at Massage Artistry in Decatur, from the intake form to the personalized wellness plan you leave with.

If you’ve been curious about booking a massage but keep putting it off because you’re not sure what to expect, this is for you.

Do I have to talk the whole time?

What am I supposed to wear?

What if the pressure is too much and I don’t want to say anything awkward?

You deserve real answers before you walk through the door.

Here’s exactly what happens during a session at Massage Artistry in Decatur from the moment you book to the moment you leave with a plan in hand.

Before You Even Arrive

When you book your first session, you’ll fill out an intake form.

This isn’t just paperwork. It’s how I show up ready for you specifically your health history, any areas of concern, medications, allergies. All of it helps me make sure your session is safe, intentional, and built around what your body actually needs.

By the time you walk in, I already have a picture of where you are. We’re not starting from scratch.

The Conversation Before We Begin

Before we get started, we’ll talk for a few minutes.

I’ll ask how you’re feeling. What’s going on. Where you’re noticing it in your body.

Some people come in knowing exactly what they want: “My neck and shoulders have been killing me.” Some people come in carrying something heavier and aren’t sure how to name it yet. I meet you wherever you are.

A few questions I ask every client:

What do you want to focus on today?
This might be the area that’s been bothering you. Or it might be something else entirely. Sometimes the spot that hurts isn’t the only place that needs attention.

What are your favorite areas to have worked?
This is separate from what’s bothering you and it matters. Maybe your neck is the problem, but nothing feels complete to you without your feet being included. I want to know that.

What’s the goal for today’s session?
This shapes everything. Some people want to feel deeply relaxed. Some want to feel looser and more mobile. Some need pain relief but also want to come down from a stressful week. Knowing what you’re here for helps me set the right tempo from the start.

The reason I ask all of this isn’t just curiosity.

If you come in with shoulder pain and I only focus on the shoulder, I might miss the bigger picture entirely. Maybe you’re carrying a toddler all day. Maybe you’ve been hunched over a laptop for eight hours. Maybe your low back has been quietly compensating for weeks and hasn’t started yelling yet.

The shoulder is just what got loud enough to get your attention.

Your body reflects your lifestyle. Your work, your stress, the way you move, the way you cope. All of it shows up. Knowing that helps me create a session that addresses what’s actually going on, not just what’s hurting most right now.

We’ll also talk about pressure. Light, medium, deeper work and I’ll explain something that most people don’t think about: different parts of your body tolerate different levels of pressure. You might be able to handle a lot on your back and shoulders, and need something much lighter on your legs. That’s completely normal. And if anything shifts during the session, you can always tell me. You won’t hurt my feelings. You’re in charge.

We’ll talk about whether you want any stretching incorporated, or whether you’d rather be still and let the table hold you. Scented or unscented oil. Any allergies.

By the time we start, the session is already yours.

What Happens on the Table

You’ll undress to your level of comfort.

I do recommend removing your bra. It allows me to work the back and shoulders properly. Beyond that, you decide. You will be draped the entire time. Only the area being worked is uncovered. You are never exposed.

Once you’re settled, I’ll step out. When you’re ready, we begin.

Do you have to talk?
No. I’ll follow your lead. If you want to chat for a little while and then let the conversation taper off, that’s fine. If you want silence from the start, that’s fine too. If I need to ask you something important, I will; otherwise, I let you be.

What I do ask for is presence. This is your time to be still. Cell phones stay down. The work you’re here to do happens best when you’re actually here.

One exception: if you’re a parent away from your child for the first time, or there’s a reason you genuinely need to stay reachable, I understand. We’ll make it work.

A few minutes in, I’ll check in on pressure.
I want to know how it feels. I’ll also be paying attention to your body’s signals if you tense up, if your breathing changes, if something needs to be adjusted. You don’t have to manage my feelings. Just let me know what you need.

Sometimes your body reveals things you didn’t mention.
This happens often. I’ll start working an area and notice tension that wasn’t on your list. Your body holds more than you realize. That’s not a problem it’s information. And it’s part of why the work goes deeper than just the spot that’s been bothering you.

Sometimes emotions come up on the table.
This is more common than people expect, and it’s completely okay. Your body holds stress, grief, and emotional weight the same way it holds physical tension. If something surfaces during your session, I’ll check in and ask what you need a tissue, a moment, or just to keep going. You’re safe here. I’m trauma-informed, and I follow your lead.

When the Session Ends

I’ll let you know when we’re finished and step out so you can dress privately.

When you’re ready, open the door and I’ll come back in.

We’ll take a few minutes to recap what I noticed, how your body responded, any areas that stood out. Then I’ll give you your Personalized Wellness Plan.

This is something a lot of people don’t expect, and it’s one of the things that makes a session here different.

Most people leave a massage feeling better and then drift back into the same patterns until something starts hurting again. That’s the cycle. Feel pain. Get relief. Go back to what was causing it. Repeat.

If you’ve ever wondered about the difference between relaxation and therapeutic work, I broke that down in depth in a recent post.

The Personalized Wellness Plan is designed to interrupt that.

It’s built specifically for you your session focus, your overall wellness goal, your recommended frequency, and tools to use at home between visits. Heating pad or ice pack. Foam roller. Whatever fits your situation.

You’ll also get access to the Client Resource Library a private collection of stretch videos, meditations, and pain relief tools you can use on your own time. Not overwhelming. Not a long list of things to do. Just resources available when you need them, tailored to help you understand what your body is telling you and respond to it.

Because the work doesn’t end when you leave the table. That’s actually where a lot of it begins.

What to Expect After Your Session

You might feel lighter. A little floaty. Some people feel so relaxed they need a few minutes before they feel ready to drive.

Some people feel some soreness the next day especially if it was your first session or we did more focused therapeutic work. That’s normal. Your body is responding and adjusting. Drink water, move gently, and an Epsom salt bath can help too.

If you have questions about anything you’re feeling after your session, reach out. I’d rather you ask than wonder.

The Thing I Want You to Know Most

A lot of people float through life without a plan for their body. They manage symptoms as they come up, push through when things get heavy, and wait until something gets bad enough that they can’t ignore it anymore.

That’s not a personal failure. It’s a pattern. And patterns can be changed once you see them.

Your first session at Massage Artistry in Decatur isn’t just an hour on a table. It’s the beginning of understanding what your body has been trying to communicate and having actual tools to respond.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. And you don’t have to wait until things get worse.

If you’re ready to start, I’d love to support you.
